Investigators

Each of the sites is staffed with full-time Principle and Sub Investigators, Certified Clinical Research Coordinators, and Clinical Research Coordinators who have extensive research experience and who have undergone rigorous training. All employees in the American Health Research Network stress patient safety and detailed patient care. Each site maintains a professional environment which allows valuable data to be obtained within the parameters of study protocols. American Health research

Dr. Selwyn Spangenthal

Dr. Selwyn Spangenthal is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonology and is a Certified Physician Investigator through the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP). He studied medicine at the University of Cape Town, South Africa and attained his MRCP (Member of the Royal College of Physicians) in London, United Kingdom. His Pulmonary fellowship was done at Tufts New England Medical Center, 1980-1982. Dr. Spangenthal has been the Principal Investigator on numerous Clinical Research studies since 1987. Dr. Spangenthal is the leading physician at American Health Research and owner of all sites in the American Health Research network. Outside of patient care Dr. Spangenthal enjoys spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren, running, yoga, watching movies, reading and going to the theater.

Aamer Qureshi, MD, FACC, FSCAI

Dr. Qureshi was born in Rawalpindi, Pakistan and attended Dow Medical School at the University of Karachi, graduating in 1989. From there he came to the United States, and completed a combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics internship and residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical center in New York City, followed by an adult Cardiovascular fellowship at St. Vincent’s Hospital, finishing in 1998. He then entered the private practice of Cardiology, initially in Columbia and Orangeburg, SC. He moved to Charlotte in 2002 to practice with The Heart Center of Charlotte and joined Mecklenburg Heart Specialists in 2006. He is board-certified in Intervention Cardiology, Cardiovascular Medicine, and Internal Medicine. He has expertise in Cardiac catheterization, Peripheral vascular intervention, Coronary intervention, Pacemaker implantation, Vein ablation, and Non-invasive cardiac evaluation and follow-up. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and a fellow of the Society of Cardiac Angiography and intervention. Dr. Qureshi is married and has 2 children. In his spare time, Dr. Qureshi enjoys spending time with his family and competes in the sport of Squash.

Dr. William Ashe

Dr. Ashe was naturally drawn to pediatrics due to children’s honesty, directness, and ability to recover from the most serious conditions. He enjoys the uniqueness of pediatric pulmonary medicine and providing care to a variety of chronic illnesses such as premature lung diseases, cystic fibrosis, and asthma. Dr. Ashe is an advocate for children with debilitating handicaps. Dr. Ashe specializes in pediatric respiratory and allergy diseases and has practiced in the Charlotte region for the past nineteen years. He is co-director of the Western Carolina Cystic Fibrosis Center and Assistant Director of the Holy Angels Institute. He has served on numerous pediatric medical committees and boards and is actively involved in medical education in the community.  Dr. Ashe was awarded the Charlotte Top Docs Award in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014. He enjoys a number of outdoor activities and is an avid golfer. He and his wife have 3 children.

Dr. Hugh Black

Dr. Black completed his residency in General Pediatrics and a fellowship in Pediatric Pulmonary. He focused on treating children with allergies, asthma, and Cystic Fibrosis. As an adjunct teaching professor for the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, he enjoys teaching local physicians in training and medical students from UNC Chapel Hill. He has been a part of the UNC medical school teaching program in Charlotte for 15 years. Dr. Black has done extensive research on Cystic Fibrosis and is co-director of the Western Carolina Cystic Fibrosis Center. Additionally, he has ongoing participation in asthma related research and is currently active in the Charlotte Pediatric Medical Society.  He was awarded the Charlotte Top Docs Award in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 in pediatric allergy and pediatric pulmonary medicine.In his spare time, Dr. Black spends time with his wife and two children, and he helps in community outreach efforts to shelter homeless families.


Dr. Thomas Humphries

Dr. Humphries was a Morehead Scholar at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is past chairman of the North Carolina Asthma Board and has been active in asthma research. Throughout his career, he has personally evaluated over 25,000 patients with asthma and allergic diseases and earned the 2010 Charlotte Top Docs Award.  He is frequently consulted on patients who have chronic asthma and those with severe allergic rhinitis. The father of 6 children, Dr. Humphries enjoys traveling, scuba diving, fishing, and doing projects on his farm.

 

Dr. Douglas Johnston

Dr. Johnston is a fellow of the ACAAI, AAAAI and a member of the Clinical Immunology Society. He is an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine/ Allergy & Immunology at the Edward Via School of Osteopathic Medicine in Spartanburg, SC. Dr. Johnston is also a member of the AAAAI AAAAI Allergic Skin Disease Committee and is the featured allergist on the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America’s “Ask the Allergist” website. When not working, he enjoys traveling with his family and cooking.

 

Dr. Vandana Patel

Dr. Patel became a physician because it fulfills three of her life passions: learning and teaching, serving the community, and creating meaningful human relationships. She enjoys seeing patients of all ages with a wide spectrum of allergic and immune diseases. Her special areas of interest include food allergies, adverse reactions to drugs, allergic rhinitis, and asthma. Dr. Patel is a native of South Williamson, Kentucky. She has been involved in both clinical and basic science research throughout her career. Dr. Patel is a member of American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology; the American College of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology; the American Medical Association; and the American Academy of Pediatrics. She serves as teaching facility member at Levine Children’s Hospital. Dr. Patel enjoys spending time with her husband and three children, cooking, and reading.

Dr. James Carswell

Dr. Carswell is a graduate of Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina and The Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He completed residency and fellowship training at The University of Virginia Health Sciences Center, where he first obtained experience in medical research. He holds board certification in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Sleep Disorders Medicine. He lives in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina with his wife and 2 sons.  He is currently serving as the main Primary Investigator at Clinical Research of Charleston.  

Dr. William Dawson

Dr. Dawson holds board certification in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, Sleep Medicine and Critical Care. He is currently a Sub Investigator at Clinical Research of Charleston.  

Dr. Jason Gunn

Dr. Gunn holds board certification in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care.  He is currently a Sub Investigator at Clinical Research of Charleston. 

Dr. Steven Herndon

Dr. Herndon holds board certification in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care. He is currently a Sub Investigator at Clinical Research of Charleston.

Dr. John Mitchell

Dr. Mitchell holds board certification in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care Medicine and Sleep Medicine. He is currently a Sub Investigator at Clinical Research of Charleston.    

Dr. Graham Scott

Dr. Scott holds board certification in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Sleep Disorders Medicine. He has 28 years of research experience and is currently a Sub Investigator at Clinical Research of Charleston.

Dr. Sever Surdulescu

Dr. Surdulescu has been affiliated with Clinical Research of Lake Norman since January of 2013. Dr. Surdulescu came to the United States from Romania after completing medical school in 1992. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at St. Luke's Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio and later specialized in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Surdulescu earned certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine by passing his board examination in 1997. He earned board certification in pulmonary medicine in 2000, critical care in 2001 and sleep medicine in 2003.Dr. Surdulescu has provided pulmonary and critical care services in the Lake Norman area for nearly ten years. Dr. Surdulescu lives in Lake Norman with his wife and daughter. He enjoys spending time with his family, playing soccer and traveling.

Dr. Arun Adlakha

Dr. Adlakha is board certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine; Board Eligible Critical Care and Sleep Disorders.  He trained at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN.  Currently Assistant Professor of Medicine at USC School of Medicine, Columbia, SC.

 

 

 

Dr. Micheal Denenberg

Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary, Sleep Disorders and Critical Care. Dr. Denenberg trained at Northwestern University Medical Center and Beth Israel Medical Center.
