American Health Research

American Health Research employs Clinical Research Coordinators, Data Entry Coordinators, Clinical Research Assistants, Marketing and Community Outreach Coordinators, a Recruitment Specialist, and a Regulatory Specialist that specialize in quick study start-up, patient recruitment, collecting good quality data and patient retention. We all follow a set of standard operating procedures as well as trial protocols, Good Clinical Practice and HIPAA guidelines to provide a smooth clinical trial process for all involved.

American Health Research is a clinical research company located in Charlotte, North Carolina dedicated to obtaining quality data in healthcare and pharmaceutical research. Dr. Selwyn Spangenthal has 20+ years of clinical research experience. American Health Research focuses on Phase II, III, and IV clinical trials. Subjects for research studies are generated from our large pulmonary practice and large patient database.

Our staff

Chris Thompson, PA  
Respiratory Care Practitioner
Chris joined American Health Research in June 2007. He has 21 years of experience in Pulmonary Function Testing and Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing. Chris started his course work at the University of Miami in 1989, and completed his Respiratory Therapist degree with ATI College of Health in 1991. He is also the creator of “CPET BUDDY”, a stress test assistance software. 

Connie Divel   
Site Director/Marketing Director, OSHA Officer
Connie joined American Health Research in April 2014. She has been in the medical sales field for 17 years and she has owned a yoga studio and holistic healing center. When she returned to the work force, she specialized in respiratory equipment sales before joining AHR where she is able to incorporate her love of community outreach and education. In her spare time, Connie enjoys spending time in nature, hiking, teaching and practicing yoga, reading, and traveling.

Our Investigators

Dr. Selwyn Spangenthal

Dr. Selwyn Spangenthal is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonology and is a Certified Physician Investigator through the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP). He studied medicine at the University of Cape Town, South Africa and attained his MRCP (Member of the Royal College of Physicians) in London, United Kingdom. His Pulmonary fellowship was done at Tufts New England Medical Center, 1980-1982. Dr. Spangenthal has been the Principal Investigator on numerous Clinical Research studies since 1987. Dr. Spangenthal is the leading physician at American Health Research and owner of all sites in the American Health Research network. Outside of patient care Dr. Spangenthal enjoys spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren, running, yoga, watching movies, reading and going to the theater

Dr. Samuel J. Peretsman

Dr. Samuel Peretsman is a board-certified Urologist who joined the American Health Research team as of 2018. He is a graduate from Duke University who later studied at Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed his residency at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, specializing in urology. Later completing his fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, New York, specializing in urologic oncology. He is a current member of the American Urological Association and Society of Urologic Oncology Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was awarded Best Doctors, The Charlotte Business Journal in 2013, Best Doctors North Carolina in 2013 and 2014, and Top Doctors in the US in 2013 and 2014. 

Dr. J. Slade Hubbard

Dr J. Slade Hubbard is Board Certified by the American Urological Association. After graduating from Davidson College, he attended the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  His internship in general surgery and urological surgery residency were at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Dr Hubbard has been involved in clinical research dating back to his medical school and residency days as well as during his post-graduate career.  He has been the principal investigator on several urologic research studies.  Outside of work, Dr Hubbard enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons and is an avid golfer and outdoorsman.
